Jacob Brower: Recognize those who make our community a great place to live

Tuesday, August 5, 2014

The nature of the news business is that bad news often takes precedent.

After all, things happening the way they're supposed to happen makes for boring headlines, and failure to serve as the public's watchdog would be negligent.

But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't take time to smell the roses and focus on the things that make our community great.

I have lived in this area my entire life, save a few years. I enjoy traveling from time to time, but I'm always glad to come back home. I believe we are blessed to live in a great community, and I am sure you feel the same way.

So what are the things that make our community great? Sure, natural beauty is one.

Not many experiences can top listening to the birds sing in my back yard as I sip my coffee, or viewing wooded areas while driving down our scenic roads.

But nature alone does not make a great community. It takes great people, organizations, businesses and attractions to add to our quality of life.

The goal of our Readers' Choice Ballot, which appears on Page 8A of today's paper, is to give credit where credit is due. We want you to tell us what makes our community great. From the person who always greets you with a friendly smile, to the restaurant where you're treated like family, to the teacher or pastor you find inspirational, we want to give the Best of the Best in our community the recognition they deserve. Winners will be named in an upcoming special edition.

Please take time to make your voice heard in our Readers' Choice survey, and help us give credit to those who make our community a great place to live.
