Chamber hopes to keep residents in town on a Friday night

The Cassville Area Chamber of Commerce hopes to keep residents in town on a Friday night with an upcoming event.

The 2014 Friday Squared event will take place on the courthouse square with the theme of Christmas in July. It will feature live music from the 221 band and a screening of the film "Jack Frost." Surrounding businesses and restaurants will also stay open late for the event.

"This event is a really good way to support our businesses and to remind the community to shop locally," said Mindi Artherton, director of the Cassville Area Chamber of Commerce. "We are striving to create exposure while providing a fun, safe family-friendly event for the community."

The second annual Sno-Glo 5K will also take place during the event.

"The Sno-Glo is a great way to keep people in town for a weekend," said Artherton. "It is also an excellent way to bring people from out of town to Cassville. It's a great way to increase our community's exposure."

Last year's run brought in 93 participants, and Artherton is hoping for even more this year.

"We've added chip timing for the run and upgraded the shirts that the runners will wear, so we hope that will be enticing enough to bring in more participants," Artherton said.

Participants will receive a glow stick to wear while they run, but Artherton says runners are encouraged to bring their own as well. The participant that adds the most glow to his or her attire will win a $30 Cassville Cash coupon. The Cassville High School and Cassville Middle School cheerleaders will be tossing fake snow at each runner as they cross the finish line.

The route for the 5K will begin and end at the square. Awards will be given to the overall men's and women's winners, as well as the top runners in each age group. After the awards ceremony, the outdoor movie screening will take place.

Chamber members may set up booths for their businesses at the event for free, and anyone selling fresh produce can also set up a booth at no cost. Non-members may also set up booths at the cost of $25. The deadline for applications for businesses to participate is noon on July 3.

The 2014 Friday Squared and Sno-Glo 5K events will take place on July 11. The live music will start at 7 p.m., and the race will start at 8 p.m.
