Proud to be an American

On Friday, May 30, the traditional Memorial Day, Southwest Missouri Office on Aging and the Central Crossing Center staff, with the help of Arvest Bank, Country Fresh Market, the VFW, and Tru Care Assisted Living, honored local veterans with a free lunch and program. The theme of the event was "Proud to be an American." Pictured above are: former POW Joe Still and Melanie Mead. Donna Formhals crocheted a U.S. flag, which she donated to the Central Crossing Senior Center. Formhals and O. J. Thompson, the administrator, drew names to present the crocheted flag to a veteran, with Jerry Shelton named the winner. In 1953, Shelton left family and home to serve in the Army in the 11th Airborne Division. Contributed photo
