Cassville sees addition of familiar rival in basketball

The Missouri High School Activities Association announced its biennial district alignments for football and basketball on Saturday morning.

MSHAA used the enrollment of its member schools to adjust class sizes (six in football and five in basketball).

Public schools use the exact enrollment sizes. However, private schools enrollments are multiplied by 1.35 to provide an adjusted enrollment figure.

There are always a few head-scratching district pods.

For example, Pierce City and Thayer football teams are in the newly formed Class 1, District 2. The distance between the two schools is 182 miles, and 123 miles to Cabool.

Monett and Cassville saw no change in their Class 3, District 4 football pod with Reeds Spring, Hollister, Aurora, Mt. Vernon and East Newton.

However, there was a shakeup in Class 1.

Pierce City, Greenfield, Sarcoxie, Lockwood, Marionville and Miller moved to Class 1, District 2, leaving McAuley, Jasper and Liberal to join Thayer, and Cabool.

Sarcoxie was a Class 2 school last season. Thayer and Cabool had been in District 1, which played on the far east side of the state a season ago.

McAuley, Jasper and Liberal are in the newly-designed District 3 with Adrian, Archie, Drexel, Midway and Rich Hill.

Class 4, District 5, which includes Webb City, Carl Junction and McDonald County, has two new teams with Bolivar and Rogersville replacing Carthage and Republic, which also moved up to Class 5.

Other interesting football classification notes included Kickapoo joining Joplin as the only Class 6 representative in southwest Missouri.

Basketball

In basketball, every area team was affected.

In Class 4, Cassville fans escaped the dreaded Republic district and return to a familiar grouping of Carl Junction, Carthage, McDonald County, Webb City and Monett.

In Class 3, District 12, Sarcoxie and Southwest fell to Class 2.

The new look District 12 contains Butler, Diamond, East Newton, El Dorado Springs, Lamar, Mt. Vernon, Seneca and Stockton.

With the arrival of Southwest and Sarcoxie, Greenfield and Jasper were booted to District 13 with Adrian, Archie, Liberal, Lockwood, Midway and Rich Hill.

Class 2, District 12 now contains Southwest, Sarcoxie, College Heights, McAuley, Miller, Pierce City, Purdy and Wheaton.

Class 1 saw the breakup of Exeter and Verona.

The Wildcats were moved to District 5 with Dadeville, Everton, Fair Play, Golden City, Sheldon, Thomas Jefferson and Walnut Grove.

Exeter, in District 4, plays Bradleyville, Chadwick, Hurley, Lutie, New Covenant, Niangua and School of the Ozarks.

Two-time defending state champion Republic moved from Class 4 to Class 5.
