R.L. Tichenor, 81, of Kansas City, passed away Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, in North Kansas City.

He was born Sept. 27, 1932, in Oklahoma City, Okla., the son of Melvin and Opal (Fering) Tichenor. On July 1, 1960, he was united in marriage to Gloria Werbe, who survives.

Additional survivors incude: three children, Linda Kay Shadowen, of Branson, Randy Tichenor, of Springfield, and Robben L. Hughes, of Kansas City; four brothers, Jean Tichenor, of Wheaton, Ed Tichenor, of Abilene, Texas, John Tichenor, of Wasilla, Alaska, and Charles Tichenor, of Wheaton; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Lloyd Tichenor.

He graduated from high school at Rocky Comfort and received his master's degree from Sanford College in Alabama. During the Korean War, he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving until Aug. 20, 1954. For several years, he was employed as an industrial engineer at Ford Motor, traveling from Kansas City to Washington, Northern Mexico and Alaska. For the last 30 years, he had been self-employed. He was a member of Northgate Baptist Church since 1967. He was a member the Masonic Lodge for 37 years.

Graveside services, with military honors, were held Thursday in Rocky Comfort Cemetery, at Rocky Comfort, under direction of McQueen Funeral Home, Wheaton.
