Carl Junction downs Cassville

The Carl Junction Bulldogs (5-3) defeated Cassville (4-6), 72-43 on Friday. The Bulldogs built a 37-20 halftime lead and led 57-31 to start the final frame.

The Wildcats were led in scoring by Ethan Lowrey with 23 points. Gabe Kirk added 7 points. Carl Junction was paced by Matt Magee's 23.

The Wildcats travel to Mt. Vernon on Thursday and then host Lamar Friday. Tip-off for both contests is 6 p.m.

Blue Eye defeats Cassville girls

Blue Eye (8-1) rode a first-half wave of momentum and built a 36-17 lead on the Cassville Lady Wildcats (1-8) en route to a 54-31 win Friday.

Cassville was paced in scoring by Brittni Long and Raeghan Blisard with 12 points each.

The Lady Wildcats travel to Mt. Vernon on Thursday. Game time is set for 6 p.m.

Southwest volleyball practice starts Jan. 27

Seventh and eighth grade volleyball practice at Southwest Middle School starts Jan. 27.

Practice begins at 3:30 p.m. in the middle school gym. All players need an athletic physical before practicing.

SW athletes ear academic all-state honors

Seven Southwest High School volleyball players have been named to the academic all-state team. Seniors Montana Hendrix, Britney Mitchell and Lauren Mitchell; junior Kayna McNabb; and sophomores Jaime Shrum, Savana Leonhardt and Mikaela Black were all honored.

Hendrix made the team for the fourth year in a row and Shrum earned all-state honors for the second time. The other five players were first time recipients.

Coach Steve Voyak said the overall GPA of the varsity team was 3.82 on a 4.0 scale. The Lady Trojans finished the season with a 26-5-2 record.

Purdy falls to Greenfield

The Purdy Eagles struggled with the Greenfield Wildcats' pressure and dropped an opening round game in the Miller Tournament, 70-40, on Thursday night.

Purdy was led in scoring by Alex Mareth with 14 points.

The Eagles travel to Pierce City on Friday. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.

Wheaton falls to East Newton

The Wheaton Bulldogs (2-10) dropped a 71-47 decision to East Newton on Thursday.

The Patriots led 22-10 after one period and 44-23 at halftime.

Wheaton was led in scoring by Matt Hickman with 14 points and Chase Cantwell with 13 points.

The Bulldogs host Southwest on Friday. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

Southwest trips Exeter in OT

The Southwest Trojans took control of a nip-and-tuck battle with Exeter in overtime to claim a 79-74 win on Friday.

Southwest (4-6, 1-0) outscored Exeter (5-4, 2-1) 17-12 in the extra session.

Southwest travels to Seneca and Exeter hosts Thomas Jefferson on Friday. Tipoff for both contests is scheduled for 6 p.m.
