Spokane trips Lady Wildcats at Blue Eye Invitational
It took six consecutive free throws by Peach Griffith in the final minute for the Spokane Lady Owls to finally subdue Cassville's Lady Wildcats, 55-49, in the opening round of the Blue Eye Invitational on Monday, Dec. 2.
Spokane led for nearly the entire contest but could never shake Cassville's determined squad. Even though the Lady Wildcats only lead was a slim 19-17 score late in the first half, the Lady Owls were never comfortable until the final horn.
Spokane opened the game with an 11-2 run and led 13-4 with just 2:30 left in the opening quarter. Cassville rallied with buckets from Britani Long and Devyn Callahan to pull within 15-12.
Spokane added another point to the margin in a low-scoring second quarter, shrugging off Cassville's brief lead with a 6-0 run to finish the half. Cassville trailed at the break, 23-19.
The Lady Wildcats were already deep in foul trouble at that point. Spokane started shooting double-bonus free throws in the first quarter of the tightly-called contest, forcing coach Chris Shore to substitute often for his handcuffed starters.
Cassville trailed by as many as 9 points in the third quarter before cutting Spokane's lead to just 49-47 with 1:03 on the fourth quarter clock. But Griffith knocked down those six freebies under pressure to seal the win for the Lady Owls.
