Purdy Eagles open with hardwood victory
The Purdy Eagles' fullcourt pressure forced 21 turnovers and Brent Cornman scored a game high 19 points to lead the Eagles to a 49-46 win over Greenwood in the basketball season opener on Nov. 26
The night started out well for Purdy as the Eagles took a quick 4-0 lead on a pair of free throws from Alex Mareth and a jumper from Cornman.
Greenwood countered with seven straight points, started by Mason Priest's 3-pointer from the left wing. But Purdy would get a pair of 3-pointers, from Robby Moody and Mareth, to take a 10-9 lead at the end of one period of play.
The second quarter saw things really start to go Purdy's way. Greenwood's 6'5" post Riley Keith picked up two quick fouls less than two minutes into the quarter and was sent to the bench.
Not only did his departure free up the lane for Purdy, it also allowed Cornman, who was guarding Keith closely, to be more aggressive and he took full advantage.
Cornman scored all of Purdy's points in the second, starting with a 3-pointer and ending with another as he totaled 10 points in the period and sent the Eagles to the locker room up 20-16.
Purdy went right back to work in the third period with their best offensive quarter of the night.
The Eagles' pressure continued to generate turnovers and some easy baskets as Purdy took their biggest lead of the night on another Cornman three to go up 11 at 31-20.
Greenwood answered with buckets in the paint but Mareth countered with 6 points down the stretch, and Purdy led by 10 as the final quarter began.
Greenwood finally began to settle in, handle the Purdy pressure and reel in the Eagles in the fourth quarter.
Keith and Priest combined on a 9-3 run to start the period and the lead was down to four.
After two quick baskets for Purdy, Greenwood responded with a 5-0 burst to get the lead down to three. A steal and layup from Jonatan Salazer made it 46-41 Purdy and put Greenwood into fouling mode.
Keith would score again and the Blue Jays would foul Moody to send him to the line for a one and one.
After making the first, Moody missed the second, leaving the Purdy lead at 4. The Blue Jays brought the ball up the floor and found Priest on the left wing for an off-balance 3-pointer to cut the lead down to 1 point with 28.6 seconds remaining in the game.
Greenwood was looking to foul again, sending Cornman to the line. Cool as could be, he hit both freebies to force Greenwood to look for a triple.
The Blue Jays would get two shots from beyond the arc and a foul on Keith while attempting to put back an offensive rebound. Greenwood would not find the hoop again and Purdy held on for the 49-46 win.
Cornman led the way with 19 points, including three 3-pointers. Mareth contributed 15 points and eight rebounds.
The Eagles resume action after the Thanksgiving break at the Clever Tournament, where they will take on Sparta Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
