Volunteers to assist with Medicare enrollment

Wednesday, October 2, 2013

Seniors wishing to enroll in the Medicare Assistance Program will have the opportunity to receive assistance from trained volunteers, starting on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at the Central Crossing Senior Center in Shell Knob.

Volunteers will be offering counseling and assistance in making changes to Part D coverage and changing providers on the Advantage Plan.

"There are many changes in Medicare this year," said Glenn Phillips, executive officer of the Shell Knob Seniors, Inc. Board. "Many providers are changing the prescription drugs they will cover, changing tiers, and changing the cost of certain drugs. Seniors who do not use an independent review program may get caught with some of these very expensive changes."

At the Medicare Assistance Program hosted last year, a total of 148 seniors took advantage of the service. They had a combined savings of over $40,000.

"This is our sixth year for this program and each year seniors have benefited from the counseling and had significant savings," Phillips said.

Although the service is free, appointments are necessary. To make an appointment, call the coordinator at 417-858-3456. If calls are made outside of business hours, leave a message and the coordinator will return the call for the appointment.

Those wishing to become counselors may also call the center at 417-858-3456 and register for training.
