Wheaton claims tourney win
The Wheaton Lady Bulldogs won the Everton Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 28.
The Lady Bulldogs made the most of their tournament action.
In pool play, Wheaton defeated Pleasant Hope 25-16, 28-26 and Everton 25-12, 25-18 before advancing to the championship against the School of the Ozarks.
Both squads entered the title tilt with an unblemished pool play record.
Wheaton capitalized on several big runs and won the first set 25-14.
The second set was much closer. The Lady Bulldogs trailed for most of the match, but eventually pulled away for a 25-22 victory.
"This was a big win for my girls," said Wheaton volleyball coach Lee Coleman. "Last year, in three tournaments, these girls did not win a set. This year we have already competed well in the Southwest Tournament and now won here at Everton."
Mariah Kochell led the way for the Lady Bulldogs offensively and defensively racking up 28 kills and 21 digs in only six sets. Adison Goostree dished out 22 assists. Karlee Mason added 13 blocks and Skyler Scates had five service aces.
The Bulldogs improved to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
The Wheaton Lady Bulldog volleyball team fell in three sets to the Billings Lady Wildcats on Sept. 23.
This was the Lady Bulldogs' first look at a team in their district this season.
"Billings is a tough team with great coaching," said Coleman. "They have competed for the district championship the past three seasons."
The Lady Bulldogs started strong, winning the first set 25-22, but dropped the next two 18-25 and 19-25.
Alyssa Young led Billings with 13 kills, 6 blocks, and 4 aces.
Kochell led Wheaton with 15 kills, 5 blocks, and 10 digs. Scates had 11 assists and Macy Brattin had two aces. Mason had her strongest game of the season finishing with 7 kills and two blocks.
Wheaton travels to Southwest on Oct. 3. Matches are set to begin at 6 p.m.
