Lady Trojans volleyball defeats TJ
The Southwest Lady Trojans improved to 3-0 with a straight sets victory over Thomas Jefferson at Washburn on Thursday, Sept. 12. Southwest prevailed 25-12 and 25-20 in their Ozark 7 Conference opener.
Despite significant losses to graduation, the Lady Trojans returned depth and experience from last year's squad. Steve Voyak's starting six included four seniors: Montana Hendrix, Shannon MItchell, Britney Mitchell, and Lauren Mitchell; junior Kayna McNabb, and sophomore Jaime Shrum.
The Lady Trojans, pumped in front of their home fans, opened with a 4-1 flurry on the strength of back-to-back aces off Hendrix serves. But the Lady Cavaliers, with five freshmen dominating the nine-player roster, stormed back with an 8-1 rally to take a 9-5 lead.
Lady Trojans coach Steve Voyak calmed his team with a timeout, and the Southwest girls finished with near-perfect execution, outscoring TJ 20-5 to take the first set.
The Lady Trojans jumped in front again early in the second set, leading 6-3 on McNabb's serve. Thomas Jefferson claimed a 9-9 tie when Markaila Farnaham's weak serve barely cleared the net and died for an ace. The Lady Cavs scored the next two points, the second a crippling shot from Marisa Donica that climbed the net and fell in, to lead 11-9.
Southwest scored four consecutive points with Hendrix behind the service line to lead 14-11, and the Lady Trojans did not trail again in the contest. The Lady Cavs fell behind by 5 at 19-14, and never threatened down the stretch as Southwest cruised to the 25-20 win.
