Lady Trojans finish second at Lamar
The Southwest Lady Trojans' softball team shook off a slow start to the season by claiming second place in the Lamar Tournament on Sept. 7.
In pool play, the Lady Trojans defeated Adrian and College Heights to advance to the championship game against host Lamar.
Kendra Hayworth tossed five innings in notching the win 8-5 over Adrian.
Kaleigh Ennis closed out the game by pitching the sixth and seventh innings, earning the save.
Ennis was two-for-five at the plate and scored two runs. Hayworth went three for five at the plate with one run scored and one RBI. Vanessa Glaze was three for three with one run scored and one RBI. Whitney Curry went two for three at the dish with one run and one RBI.
Against College Heights, Southwest prevailed 10-3.
Ennis earned the win by scattering five hits over 7 innings against a district opponent. She also went three for four with one run scored and two RBIs.
Macky McNabb was a perfect four for four and scored three runs. Zia Roller finished two for three at the plate with two runs scored.
Against Lamar, the Lady Trojans were shut out by Lamar's All-State pitcher, Emmy Robertson, 10-0 in five innings.
"Robertson was as dominant today as any girl I have seen in a while," said Southwest coach Tony Eagleburger. "We didn't help our cause defensively in the bottom of the third, but I am proud of my team for getting the opportunity to play for the championship."
One bright spot for Eagleburger's young team was that as dominant as Robertson was, Southwest did pick up three hits. Two came off the bat of Roller and one by McNabb.
