Southwest school board sets 2013 tax levies

Members of the Southwest R-5 School Board approved the 2013 tax levy for the district.

Board members approved a $2.75 operational levy for the 2013-14 school year, along with an 85-cent debt service levy, for a total of $3.60 per $100 in assessed real and personal property taxes in Barry and McDonald counties.

The levies will generate approximately $1,227,957 total for the district.

Generally, approximately 86 percent of current tax revenues are collected each year, and only 15 percent of delinquent taxes are collected.

In other business, new faculty for the 2013-14 school year includes: Deborah Toler, elementary school counselor; Ashley Roe, third grade teacher; Cindy Harvey, fifth grade teacher; Julie Pruitt, eighth grade communication arts; Jeff Atchison, girls basketball and social studies teacher; Rachel Pierce, high school vo ag teacher; Brandon Burns, music and communication arts; and Rusty Roe, boys basketball and physical education.

Board members approved establishing an escrow account in the amount of $150,000 to prepay the district's general obligation bonds.

The board also reviewed:

* Student enrollment.

* Construction of an overflow parking lot for large event needs.

* Track construction at the high school.
