Richard "Sarge" Carney

Richard "Sarge" Carney, 95, of Cassville, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at the Cassville Health Care & Rehab Center in Cassville. He was born on Dec. 5, 1917, son of Addison and Maude Carney, near Cassville. He graduated from Cassville High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941. While stationed in California, he met Bernice "Bunny" Szymborski. They were married Feb. 14, 1945, in Denver, Colo. She preceded him in death on Aug. 20, 2013, after 68 years of marriage. He was a lifetime military veteran reaching the rank of Chief Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force at the time of his retirement in 1965.

Following his retirement from the U.S. Air Force, he moved his family to Cassville in June of 1965. Sarge and Bunny owned and operated the boat concession, ice house, and the laundromat at Roaring River State Park.

He was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church in Cassville.

Survivors include: three daughters, Sandi Carney Wadsworth and her husband, Roger, of Kent, England, Ret. Navy Commander Susan Carney and her husband, Philip Fleming, of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Sharon Carney Witter, of Springfield, Va.; two granddaughters; and one sister, Betty Carney, of Cassville. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Carney, his sister, Kathleen Reed, and his two half-sisters, Margaret Merkle and Nadine Cherry.

The family will receive friends today, (Wednesday) from 6 to 7 p.m. at the White Funeral Home & Crematory in Cassville. Graveside services, with full military honors, will be performed by Whiteman Air Force Base at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield on Thursday at 1 p.m.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of White Funeral Home & Crematory, Cassville.
