Joe Kent Hopkins
Joe Kent Hopkins, 77, passed away at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, on Wednesday, July 31, 2013. He was a lifelong resident of Cassville, and a member of Corinth Baptist Church.
He was born Jan. 17, 1936, son of Gail and Nola (Stockton) Hopkins in Cassville. On Sept. 29, 1956, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Elaine Wade, who survives. They have two children, Teri Jo Shackles and her husband, Doug, of Aurora, and Russell Delane Hopkins and his wife, Renee, of Cassville; five grandchildren; three sisters, Sharon McKesson, of Elkhart, Ind., Mary Dunfee, of Cassville, and Gaylene Ingram and her husband, John, of Salem.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Benny Glen Hopkins.
He graduated from Cassville High School in 1954. He was a specialist four in the U.S. Army as a mechanized artillery driver. After the service, he became a truck driver and soon purchased his own truck. In 1970, he became an owner-operator for Acoma Foods. He later became an owner-operator for Tyson Foods, where he retired after 27 years of service. For the next eight years he and Evelyn drove independently and with their son, Russell, for another five years.
Funeral services were held Sunday in Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Pastor John Duncan conducted the services. Burial with military honors was at Corinth Cemetery, Cassville.
