OACAC hosting School Readiness Fair for area youth

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

Although it seems as if summer vacation has just begun, it's time to start thinking about back- to-school time. The Barry County OACAC Neighborhood Center is hosting its 12th annual School Readiness Fair for approximately 150 students this year. The event will take place from noon to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8 at the Crowder College Cassville Campus Community Center.

"This is one of the most fun events we have all year," said Gail Reed, Barry County OACAC director. "We have a few less students signed up than last

year, but we're going gung-ho on getting them ready for back to school."

Reed said area vendors will provide services and supplies for students.

"Access Clinic will provide dental screenings, and the Missouri Lions Eye Re- search Association will give vision screenings," Reed said. "There will also be information from University of Missouri Extension on nutrition, and the Cassville YMCA on exercise and other programs for youth."

The First United Methodist Church in Cassville will supply shoes for each student, and the First Baptist Church in Cassville will donate a number of school supplies needed for the start of classes.

Students will also receive free haircuts.

"We are still accepting donations of money and supplies from the community," Reed said, "and we're looking for volunteers to help distribute items."

Community members who volunteer will pack school supply bags, prepare brochure packets, transport supplies to the fair, register children, help vendors, cook and hand out supplies.

For more information on the School Readiness Fair, visit the Neighborhood Center, which is located on Highway 248 in Cassville, or call 847-2140.
