Cassville to celebrate Christmas early

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

Even though temperatures are soaring, area residents will be focusing on wintertime this Friday night as the Cassville Area Chamber of Commerce hosts a Christmas in July-themed Friday Squared event.

Activities, which will be held around the downtown square in Cassville, will include a Sno-Glo run and an outdoor showing of the movie, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" at dusk.

The Sno-Glo run is a first for the chamber. The 5K run will start at Seventh and West streets, then wind through Cassville streets and along the Greenway Trail and end at Eighth and West streets. Spiritual Streams Fellowship and Emmanuel Baptist Church will be providing cheer stations along the route, Commerce Bank will sponsor a water station, and $30 Cassville Cash will be awarded to the runner who wears the "most glo" during the race.

Those interested in participating in the race must sign up at the chamber office by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 12. Event T-shirts will be available on a first-come, first- served basis. T-shirts are sponsored by Cassville Health Care and Rehab, Clesani Farms, TH Rogers Lumber Company and Security Bank of Southwest Missouri.

Medals will be awarded to the top overall male and female runners as well as the top runners in each age category.

"There will be snow and glow for our 5K participants," said Mindi Artherton, Chamber executive director. "We are very excited about adding a 5K to this event and are hopeful that it will make our Friday Squared even more of a success."

Several local businesses are also sponsoring holiday-related promotions in conjunction with Friday Squared. These include:

* Tomblin's will be offering 20 percent off on green or red items.

* Drawings for discounts that are good through Christmas will be offered at Forever Yours Embroidery.

* Free treats will be given to anyone who visits Whitley's wearing Christmas attire. Special Grinch Whoville shakes also will be served at the soda fountain.

* Westco will be serving Christmas cookies and punch and giving out complimentary Santa figurines. The store will also be collecting letters to Santa and hosting an in-store scavenger hunt.

In addition, the BBQ Station, Smith's Clothing and Towneley Furnishings will be offering drawings and shopping discounts.

Several booths sponsored by area businesses and organizations will be set up around the square, including: Barry Lawrence Regional Library; Cassville Middle School cheerleaders; Cassville Rotary Club; Cassville YMCA; Crowder College; Kowboy Kettle Korn; Les Jacobs Ford; Little Tommy's Dogs; McClintock Farm; Ozark Home Gardens; Starwalk Entertainment; and Tropical Sno.

From 7 to 9 p.m., the 221 Band will offer a free outdoor concert. Band members include Ryan Preddy, Jason Blankenship, Eli Stehlik and Aaron Ennis. At the conclusion of the concert, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" will be shown on a large outdoor movie screen.

Those who shop locally during Friday Squared will be entered in a drawing to win door prizes that will be given away by the Chamber at 8:45 p.m. Shoppers must make a purchase to be entered in the drawing, and one entry per person per store will be available.
