Garden Sass is benefitting from two locations

At 8 a.m. on a cool Tuesday morning, vendors of the Garden Sass Farmers market have already been selling fruits and vegetables for an hour. Despite having a market every Saturday on the downtown square, members still set up every Tuesday behind the MFA on Mineral Springs Road in Cassville. Jon Potter, president of the Garden Sass Farmers Market, explains why Garden Sass now operates at two locations.

"We used to always set up here [Mineral Springs Road] on Tuesday and Friday. We forgo Fridays here on request of the Main Street merchants, so we could draw more business back to downtown," Potter said.

Having the farmers market at the Cassville square on Saturday morning is working to bring shoppers into town. Additionally, Garden Sass vendors have tripled their own sales by moving to the square on Saturday, Potter said.

According to Steven Burcham, vice president of Garden Sass Farmers Market, each location has something to offer.

"I like setting up at both places because you get to see the regulars here, but you get to see new faces at the square," Burcham said. "I like them both."

The Tuesday location brings in about 50 customers, and by contrast, the Saturday location attracts up to 200 customers, explained Potter. Of those customers who shop the farmers market on the square 30 percent are new faces.

"Tuesdays have always been slow here, and I don't see that changing," Potter said. "We just do it because, if you try doing a farmers market just once a week, you will ruin more produce because you don't pick it."

Burcham said the only difference between setting up on Saturday as opposed to Tuesday is that vendors have to bring tables and shade, and at the Mineral Springs Road location, both are already provided. According to Burcham, the Minerals Springs Road location for the farmers market is one of the oldest in Barry County, starting around 1978.
