Some Shell Knob residents under boil order

Some Shell Knob customers of Missouri American Water were placed under a boil order advisory for drinking water on Tuesday, June 25.

The order currently is in effect for customers of Ozark Mountain #1 service area due to water pressure issues caused by a malfunctioning pump.

Christie Barnhart, external affairs manager with American Water, said about 200 customers were completely without water in the area described as Ozark Meadows #1.

"We are providing those residents with bottled water," Barnhart said. "They are also helping spread the word to other residents in that area about the boil order, which is extremely helpful."

Barnhart said one of the company's vendors was onsite late Tuesday afternoon to make repairs.

"They will be working straight through until those repairs are made," she said. "At that point, we will take water samples for the DNR and wait the mandatory 18 hours. We hope to have customers back online by early Thursday."

Roger Brock, administrator at the Barry County Health Department, said water should be boiled for three to five minutes before being used for drinking, cooking or brushing teeth.

"At this time, we are awaiting word from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR)," Brock said. "They will determine when the boil order will be lifted."

Once the boil order is lifted, impacted customers should adhere to DNR's protocols for safe drinking water:

* Flush water lines and clean faucet screens and water line strainers on mechanical dishwashing machines.

* Purge all water lines connected to fixtures and appliances, such as ice machines, beverage makers and water heaters. Clean and sanitize all fixtures, sinks and equipment connected to waterlines.

* Discard existing ice in refrigerators and ice machines. Continuously run water through the ice machine for at least five minutes. Run the ice machine and dispose of the first batch of ice. Change the water filter on the ice machine.

* Wash, rinse and sanitize all food service dishware, glassware, flatware, utensils and other food preparation items, surfaces, and equipment.
