Officers honored for life-saving heroics

Two officers with the Barry County Sheriff's Office received Life Saving Awards for their actions on June 20. Sgt. Robert Evenson and Justin "Dave" Ruark were dispatched to a call of a woman screaming on Highway HH. Upon arrival, the officers discovered a 10-year-old boy doing CPR on an unresponsive adult male. The officers took turns performing CPR, revived the man and continued aid until medical help arrived. "It felt like forever," Evenson said. "Training kicked in, and we just did what we needed to do." Officers later found out that the man was having a heart attack and died later in the hospital due to complications. "We wish he would have survived, but we gave him every chance we could." Evenson said. The citation on the Life Saving Award reads: "For outstanding police performance in the saving of a human life, and the display of conscious initiative, capability and attention to duty, thereby earning respect and admiration for himself and the department."
