Post #118 falls to Webb City 10-4
Webb City Post #322 sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth inning and broke a pitcher's duel wide open on Tuesday, June 18, defeating Cassville's Irwin-Easley Post #118 in an AAA American Legion contest, 10-4.
The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie through five complete innings before the Webb City outburst. The visitors scored five runs in the sixth and added four insurance runs in the seventh in earning the victory.
Cassville's Alex Dyer was sharp early, blanking Webb City in the initial three innings. Post #118 claimed a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Brett Nickle drew a leadoff walk from Cooper Strasser, moved to second base on Leigh Cox's sacrifice bunt, then scored on an infield hit off the bat of Gabe Kirk.
The visitors tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth frame. Austin Carter poked a one-out single and ended up at third base when Maquel Harbin singled on a hit-and-run. Carter scored when Joe Jones hit into a fielder's choice.
Cassville had a chance to make some noise in the bottom of the fifth but stranded two runners in scoring position as the tie continued.
Dyer struck out Colton Potts to open the sixth inning and gained the second out when Calem Nutting was tagged out at home by Andrew Whitham on an attempted squeeze. But Webb City churned out five hits with two outs on the board and claimed a 6-1 lead.
Cassville scored twice in the home half of the inning to cut the lead to 6-3. Zach Larson's two-out, two-RBI single scored Austin Hancock and Chase Jackson.
Webb City then erupted for four more runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach. Carter walked and later scored on a wild pitch, and then Mason Williams drilled a three-RBI triple to up the lead to 10-3.
Cox walked and scored for Cassville in the bottom of the seventh on Kirk's monster triple, but the home team would score no more.
Strasser earned the win for Webb City, while Dyer took the loss for Cassville.
Post #118 will host Carl Junction on June 27 at 5 p.m.
