Southwest R-5 hires two new teachers

On April 11, members of the Southwest R-5 School Board approved hiring two employees for the 2013-14 school year.

Members approved hiring Glenda Dalton as a part-time high school and middle school band teacher and Brandon Burns as a high school communication arts teacher and a high school and middle school vocal music teacher.

Members accepted the resignation of Keri Strahan, first grade teacher.

The board approved a health insurance plan for district employees for the 2013-14 school year. The premiums reflect a 7 percent increase over last year and a 13.5 percent increase for the buy-up plan.

Plans for summer school sessions for kinder camp, first, second and fourth grade remedial reading and high school communication arts, math and algebra II were approved.

Board members approved the purchase of an Allied 71 passenger International bus at a cost of $79,820.

The board reorganization resulted in the following officers: Danny Dalton, president; Robert Catron, vice president; Jeremy Bernard, treasurer; and Judy Brooks, secretary.

In other business, the board reviewed reports from Judy Randall, elementary principal; Beverly Bonner, middle school principal; Tosha Watson, high school principal; Kara Hendrix, curriculum director; Wanda Smith, special services director; Tom Lawrence, maintenance director; and Bob Walker, superintendent.
