Cox Monett brings asthma education to area schools
Students from five Barry County schools participated in Cox Monett Hospital's asthma education program during the 2012-13 school year.
The program recently presented certificates of appreciation to participating students at Exeter, Purdy, Southwest, Wheaton and Monett recently. All five schools completed the asthma education program, which is taught by asthma educator Brenda Barger-Saunders.
The program targets children in fourth through sixth grades who live in Barry and Lawrence counties and suffer from asthma.
A grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health funds the program, which provides asthma education to children and their families and improves asthma management at school and home.
Through the MFH grant, Cox Monett provides education, supplies, medication assistance, home assessments, access to a pediatric pulmonologist and much more, free of charge.
This year, a total of 21 schools participated in the program. Asthma screening assessments were completed by 2,461 students in the two-county area and over 1,200 students attended a general respiratory and good lung health presentation in the classroom. A total of 141 children accepted an invitation and completed the asthma education classes, and 141 students received free asthma supplies and lung testing.
