Barry County Youth Fair to be held in Wheaton June 28-29

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

The 2013 Barry County Fair will be held at Rockin' P Ranch Rodeo Arena on Highway W in Wheaton on Friday, June 28 and Saturday, June 29.

"We got a late start this year," said Ernest Ray, Barry County Fair Board president. "We hope to see the community come out to support the kids."

Check-in for Friday's events will begin at 5 p.m. The dairy cattle and fancy poultry shows will start at 6 p.m., and the dairy goat and rabbit show will be held at 7 p.m.

Saturday's activities will kick off with a Blue Ribbon Breakfast at 6 a.m. Meals, which will include eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage and coffee or juice, will be served for $4.

The beef cattle show will begin at 9 a.m., and the hog show will start at 10 a.m. Meat goats will be shown in the fair arena at 11 a.m., and the sheep and broiler show will be held at 2 p.m.

The annual Barry County Fair Premium Dinner will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Meals, which will include pulled pork, baked beans, potatoes, dessert and a drink, will cost $5.

The premium sale will follow the dinner at 7 p.m. The sale gives community members an opportunity to support youth taking part in the fair. Winning bidders receive a photo of the youth with their animal.

Melvin and Terri Priest, who own Rockin' P Ranch Rodeo, will offer a ranch rodeo at 8 p.m. on Saturday night.

The Barry County Fair will offer concessions throughout the two-day event. Proceeds from the sale of concessions will directly benefit the fair.

"The different FFA and 4-H clubs from across the county have volunteered to run the concession stand for us during the event," Ray said.

The Barry County Fair will also offer a vendor area. Booth space is available for $25.

Entries will be accepted on the days of the shows. Entry fees are $5 for beef and dairy cattle; $3 for goats, sheep and swine; and $2 for chickens.

"We are still in the process of rebuilding this year," said Ray. "We want to keep the Barry County Fair going as long as we can."

A limited amount of bleacher seating will be available at the fair. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.

Area community members and businesses are also invited to support the Barry County Fair by donating funds to the premium sale. Ray is available to pick up donations upon request.
