Lightning debarks tree

Wednesday, June 5, 2013

Linda Holmberg, of Cassville, was greeted with a surprise when she stepped outside her home in Sherwood Forest after severe storms passed over Barry County on May 24. A lightning strike debarked one of the large oak trees that stand only a few feet from the Holmberg home. The family's front yard was littered with numerous strips of tree bark that were tore from the truck of the large tree. Although the strike required Holmberg to reset her air conditioning unit, the lightning resulted in no other damage. Holmberg said numerous local residents stopped in front of her home to snap a photo of the "naked" tree during the first 24 hours after the lighting strike. In the photo above, the damaged tree stands among other Oaks in the Holmberg yard. The photo below shows a close-up of the lightning damage. Landon and Dale Brattin safely removed the tree on May 31.
