A 72-year-old Monett man has drowned after the vehicle he was riding in was swept off the road at a low water crossing over Spring River early Friday morning.

The body of Gene Cable was located approximately 100 yards downstream from where the pickup was eventually found, totally submerged in the flood waters. Another occupant of the pickup was rescued from the vehicle before it traveled down Spring River.

The low water crossing is located on Lawrence County Farm Road 2110 near Stotts City south of the Robert E. Talbot Conservation Area. The area of road frequently floods in heavy rain conditions.

Cable's body was found at approximately 7 p.m. last night (Friday, May 28) after an almost day-long search.

The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department was assisted by the Stotts City and Mt. Vernon fire departments, the Missouri Department of Conservation, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Mercy Ambulance and Biellier Wrecker Service.
