Cassville opens Legion play at Monett

The Cassville Post #119 American Legion baseball team opened the 2013 campaign with an 8-2 loss to Monett Post #91 on May 23.

Monett used a methodical scoring approach to earn the win, tallying single runs in five of their six at-bats and scoring three times in the fifth frame.

Cassville scored twice in the fifth inning.

Monett's roster featured high school players from Monett, Pierce City and Wheaton.

Both team used multiple substitutions as Monett coach Michael Calhoun and Cassville skipper Kyle Wood tried to get a feel for their new teams.

Post #91 took advantage of seven walks, scoring six times when the free-pass runner reached base.

Monett's Tyler Musick and Kole Kelley collected two RBIs apiece with a couple of hits each.

Kyle McCalister, Jordan Hall, Matt Hickman, Isaac Long and Colin Garner collected a hit a piece for Monett.

Cassville's Alex Dyer and Jordan Fisher led off the top of the fifth frame with singles and scored on Noah Hadlow's double to provide Post #118's only offensive production.

Marcus Weatherman had the only other hit for Cassville.

Monett will be in action on June 1 at Harrison Ark.

Cassville hosts Joplin on May 30.
