Harley Minnier Jr. has opened Harley's Performance and Service Center in Wheaton where he services, rebuilds and maintains Harley Davidson motorcycles.

"People from Springfield, all over southwest Missouri and northwest Arkansas bring their bikes here to be serviced, repaired or rebuilt," Minnier said. "I also rebuild Big Dog and American Ironhorse motorcycles as well."

The business has been several years in the making.

Harley art reflects achievement of a dream Democrat Photo/Melonie Roberts The gas tank of Harley Minnier's Harley Davidson reflects the realization of a 10-year dream to open his own shop. An artist friend of Minnier's painted the scene, which includes Harley's Performance and Service Center on the side of the gas tank, and included himself and Minnier on Harley Davidsons sitting just inside the open doors.

"I worked in Springfield until 2003, and with gas prices, I just couldn't make that trip every day," Minnier said. "I started working out of the Muffler Shop [in Wheaton] in 2003. I bought the property next to the Muffler Shop and tore down an old house. We poured the pad for this business, but due to personal reasons, we weren't able to get the shop built for several years."

This year, a handful of friends helped Minnier realize his dream and the performance and service center opened for business.

In this highly specialized field, one might think business would be slow, but Minnier currently has over 15 bikes in the shop needing some form of service or repair, all Harley Davidsons.

"I'm certified to work on all of them," Minnier said, "touring, cruisers and sportsters. I'm also planning to stock after market items for bikes."

Services offered at the Performance and Service Center include: tune-ups; tires; maintenance; major motor rebuilds; and bike rebuilds after wrecks.

"We're having a poker run on May 25," Minnier said. "Bikes will leave at 10 a.m. from the shop."

Cost is $15 for individual riders, $25 for rider and a passenger, $10 for an extra hand and $5 for an extra card.

First place winner will receive $100, second place will take home $50, and the holder of the worst hand will win $25.

Following the ride, a smoked pork dinner with sides will be served for all poker run participants. Non-riders can eat for $5. At that time, a 50/50 drawing will be held.

"We hope to have good weather and see a lot of people out here," Minnier said.

Harley's Performance and Service Center is open from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Appointments are appreciated.
