Cancer survivors to be honored June 1

Thursday, May 16, 2013

The South Barry County Relay For Life Committee will hold a survivor and caregiver dinner and luminaria ceremony at the Crowder College Cassville Campus Community Building at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 1.

"We would encourage the public to attend to honor cancer survivors and their caregivers and remember those we have lost," said Tiffanie Holman, who is serving as chairman of this year's event. "Luminarias will be available for the community members to honor their loved ones as well."

The main goal for this year's Relay event is to make the night special for survivors and caregivers in the local community.

"Relay has been scaled back due to lack of interest, amount of time and the availability of committee members to plan, organize and put on a full relay event," said Holman. "We have been seeing a steady decline in participation at the relay events in the past several years and it was mentioned that maybe we take a year off. We felt that cancer survivors in our community still deserved to be recognized, along with letting the community know that Relay was not going away."

Luminarias, which will cost $10 each, can be purchased at the Mercy Hospital Rehabilitation Center before the Relay, at the event or on-line at or

Community members can also make donations to the American Cancer Society on-line or by mailing contributions to: Relay For Life of South Barry County, 3322 S. Campbell Ave., Springfield, MO 98807.
