Area athletes earn state track berth

The Southwest Lady Trojans finished 12th with 23 points at the Class 2 sectional track meet at Fair Grove on Saturday, May 11.

Southwest was lead by Montana Hendrix's second place high jump. She cleared the bar at 5'2" while qualifying for state.

The Lady Trojans also qualified for state in the 4x400 relay. The team of Megan Cook, Hendrix, Shannon Mitchell and Nicole Ickes tooking third in 4:26.11.

Purdy's Kaylynn Harkey won the girls' pole vault and punched her ticket to Jefferson City with a vault of 9'6" as the Lady Eagles finished 18th with 13 points.

Southwest's Kordell McNabb threw 46' in the shot but failed to qualify for state with his sixth place finish.

Class 1 Sectional

The Drexel boys won the Class 1 sectional at Fair Grove, scoring 114 points. Jasper won the girls' division with 96.5.

Wheaton, missing a number of athletes, failed to qualify for the state meet in any events. The Bulldogs scored 13 points and placed 15th in the 23-team field.

Wheaton came close in the 4x200 relay, placing fifth. The team of Logan Moore, Chase Cantwell, Joseph Robbins and Tyler Pendergraft finished in 1:42.03.

Moore was sixth in the 200-meter, and Robbins placed seventh in the 300-meter hurdles.

Both the Wheaton 4x800 and 4x100 meter relays finished eighth.
