Call before digging

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

Check before you dig.

That is the message the Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC) is sending to local homeowners before they begin their spring projects that require digging or excavation work.

Before digging, the PSC urges residents to call 1-800-DIG-RITE (1-800-344-7483) so underground utilities can be marked.

"Digging activity damages a buried utility line every three minutes in the United States according to the Common Ground Alliance," said Robert Kenney, PSC chairman. "National Safe Digging Month is a great time to remind everyone of the need to call before they dig."

Missouri law requires anyone digging underground to call 811 or 1-800-DIG-RITE three days before excavation begins. The call will be taken by the Missouri One Call Center, which notifies all relevant utility services in the project area. Within two working days, all underground lines, pipes and cables will be marked.

"We urge people to protect themselves, their loved ones and their property by making the call," Kenney said.
