Event to celebrate courthouse anniversary

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

The Cassville Area Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for its next Friday Squared celebration, which will be held on the downtown square from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, May 10. The event will be designed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Barry County Courthouse.

"My goal for the May event is for everyone to come around the square and enjoy the music and complimentary dinner and join in celebrating our history," said Mindi Artherton, chamber executive director. "I also would really encourage everyone to take advantage of extended shopping hours.

"I would like to see an increase in vendors for this year's Friday Squared events, both May and July," continued Artherton. "It is a great avenue for businesses to gain additional exposure and interact with customers both new and old."

The Barry County Commission will offer free hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks during the event. Food will be served on the south side of the square.

Local bluegrass band Spur of the Moment, which includes band members Cody Cantwell, Wyatt Clevenger, Gary Cook Ronnie Hedrick and Steve Jordan, will provide musical entertainment from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and from 7:15 to 8 p.m.

The Barry County Commission will offer a special program, featuring Sen. Emory Melton, from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m., and the Barry County Historical Society will offer tours of the Bayless House throughout the Friday Squared event.

The event will also offer a pie contest. First place prizes will be awarded to the best cream pie, best fruit pie and best other dessert pie. Each winner will receive two tickets to The Show and $15 in Cassville Cash. Four tickets to The Show and $20 in Cassville Cash will be awarded to the baker who enters the pie that is selected as best overall.

Pies will be judged on overall appearance, crust, filling and overall taste.

Pie entries must be baked at home. Commercial bakeries and restaurants are not eligible to participate. Recipes must be submitted with pie entries. Pies must be baked in eight- to 10-inch non-returnable pie pans. Bakers can submit as many pies as they want.

Pies should be submitted to the chamber office from 2 to 4 p.m. or at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall from 4 to 5 p.m. on May 10.

"It is going to be a fun evening celebrating our heritage," said Artherton. "It is a great reason to stay in town on a Friday night an enjoy what Cassville has to offer rather than going out of town.

"If you are around the square, this would be a great opportunity to host some type of promotion going on during the event," continued Artherton. "Businesses not located on the square that are chamber members are invited to set up booths on the square at no cost during the event."

Non-chamber members are also invited to participate. Booth rental for non-chamber members is $40.

"We have just started the planning stages for the July Friday Squared event," said Artherton. "I am happy to report that the committee has decided to once again have Christmas in July. We will be showing a movie during the July event. I would love to hear from the community regarding Christmas movie suggestions.

"We had a Christmas in July Friday Squared event in 2011, and it was our largest event," continued Artherton. "It was really a lot of fun and everyone was really excited about the theme. I am optimistic that this event will be even better."
