On April 5, 137 Cassville Middle School sixth grade students participated in a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) graduation ceremony in the middle school gymnasium. Several parents and community members attended the event to show support for the DARE graduates.

After Cassville Middle School Principal Terry Jamieson welcomed all attendees and graduates, Cassville Dare and school community outreach officer Jennifer Luckey recognized special guests in attendance, including: Cassville Mayor Bill Shiveley; Cassville Police Chief Dana Kammerlohr; Corp. Donald Privett, of the Cassville Police Department; Cassville Court Clerk Jennifer Privett; Southwest Missouri Drug Task Force Director John Luckey; Cassville High School SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) advisors Elaine Boles and Derek Judd; and CHS SADD members.

"This is sixth grade DARE graduation 2013," said Luckey. "It is referenced as the end, but this is really the beginning. This is the beginning of you putting in place actions you have learned through our program.

"It is the beginning of you making safe and responsible decisions," continued Luckey. "It is the beginning of you setting an example with the good, positive choices you make. It is the beginning of your future lifestyle and character."

Luckey encouraged all of the students to continue to practice and improve upon the skills they learned during the 10-week DARE program.

"I encourage you to recall the decision making model you learned and the question dialogues to make the right choices and act accordingly," said Luckey. "Congratulations on your graduation."

Luckey introduced six students who were selected as the 2013 DARE Essay Contest winners. Recognized students were Reilly Nichlos, Lauren Turner, Marissa Matthews, Avery Brown, Savannah James and Lindsay Moss.

After a slide show presentation, each DARE graduate was recognized by Melanie Stringer, CMS vice principal and congratulated by Luckey and CHS SADD members. Each graduate also received a DARE certification card.
