Relay celebration is June 1

The South Barry County Relay For Life Committee will hold a Relay Celebration at the Crowder College Cassville Campus on Saturday, June 1. All community members are invited to attend.

"This year, the Relay Committee will be hosting a community Relay Celebration with a Survivor Dinner and luminaria ceremony," said Kala Glass, American Cancer Society community manager. "Exact times have yet to be set in stone, but should be soon.

"While we won't be relaying for 12 hours, we'll still be showing our survivors and caregivers the love we have for them and giving those who have lost someone to cancer the opportunity to light a candle and find solace and friendship with others who have been down that road," said Glass. "We invite the whole community to join us for a few hours on June 1 to cheer on the survivors as they walk their lap and to light a luminaria bag in honor or in memory of someone who's faced this disease."

The main goal for this year's Relay event is to make the night special for survivors and caregivers in the local community.

"Relay has been scaled back this year due to lack of interest, amount of time and the availability of committee members to plan, organize and put on a full relay event," said Tiffanie Holman, who is serving as chairman for this year's event. "We have been seeing a steady decline in participation at the relay events in the past several years and it was mentioned that maybe we take a year off. We felt that cancer survivors in our community still deserved to be recognized, along with letting the community know that Relay was not going away."

Relay committee and teams will still do some fundraising activities in order to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.

"Community members should still plan to participate in the event this year to pay tribute to those who have lost their battle with cancer and honor those who have survived or may still be fighting," said Holman. "Each and every one of us has been affected by cancer in one way or another and the Relay allows for that special time to remember/honor our loved ones."

Luminarias can be purchased at the Mercy Hospital Rehabilitation Center before the Relay or at the event on the night of the celebration. Luminarias, which will cost $10 each, can also be purchased on-line at or at

Community members can also make donations to this year's Relay on-line at or by mailing contributions to: Relay For life of South Barry County, 3322 S. Campbell Ave., Springfield, MO 98807.
