Sunday, March 24, 2013

Holiday Island Elks Lodge #1042 recently announced the winners of its 2012-13 "Americanism" essay contest, which they sponsor annually for area middle school students. This year's theme was "What does the National Anthem mean to me?" More than 200 essays were turned in from area schools. First place was awarded to Kaylee Liley of Cassville. She received a cash reward, and her essay will be sent to the state competition. "This year, all of the essays turned in will be sent to our troops overseas," said Americanism program chairman Jim Barrett.
