Cassville Wildcats zizzered in district opener
The West Plains Zizzers ended the basketball season for the Cassville Wildcats on Feb. 25 with a 66-46 win at the Class 4, District 11 Tournament at Rogersville.
The Zizzers controlled the boards and the tempo as they methodically dismantled Cassville a quarter at a time.
West Plains never trailed in the ball game, owning quarter leads of 18-7, 34-18 and 54-32 enroute to the victory. The Zizzers owned the boards by a 25-18 margin, including nine decisive offensive rebounds. Cassville committed 17 turnovers in the contest.
The Zizzers opened the game with a 9-3 run. The Wildcats trailed 6-3 after a Jordan Shore basket and a Garrett Kirk free throw, but Dusty Harrill's trey widened the gap. Ty Craig scored to pull Cassville within 9-5, but West Plains closed out the period with a 9-2 run.
The Zizzers opened a 20-point lead in the second period when Cole Butler scored and added a free throw at the 1:07 mark.
Craig and Gabe Kirk scored the last two baskets of the half to give the Wildcats, trailing 34-18 at half. a glimmer of hope.
Zack Flippin and Justin Davis both hit long bombs for West Plains in the opening salvo of the third quarter to open a 42-20 lead. The Wildcats would never get the lead under 20 points again.
West Plains led by 22 at the final break and coasted through the final quarter to claim the 66-46 win.
The Wildcats finish the season at 7-17. West Plains moves on to play Logan-Rogersville on Thursday in the district semifinals.
