Verona man charged with burglary
A Verona man has been arrested in connection with a burglary at an Aurora Rural Fire Department building near Madry last week.
Dennis Martin Schmidt, 42, was charged with felony burglary and stealing after law enforcement officials served a search warrant at his home on Highway VV near Pleasant Ridge and found numerous fire department items marked with "Aurora Rural Fire Dist. #2."
According to a press release issued by the Barry County Sheriff's Department, a stolen four-wheeler was recovered at the Schmidt home on Feb. 15 by Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper Travis Hilburn. Officers were then able to secure a search warrant, which was served by Sheriff Mick Epperly, Chief Deputy Leonard Collins, Detective Doug Henry and members of the Highway Patrol and the Southwest Missouri Drug Task Force.
When officers entered the home, they found Schmidt and 31-year-old Jennie Marie Boyd inside. During a sweep of the residence, drugs were found in plain sight. The fire department items were discovered after Schmidt consented to a more thorough search of his residence.
In addition to the burglary and stealing charges filed against Schmidt, he has outstanding warrants for a parole violation and driving while suspended.
Boyd was charged with possession of a controlled substance.
Schmidt's bond was set at $52,500, and Boyd's bond amount is $15,000. Both subjects were arrested without incident.
The stolen items will be returned to the Aurora Fire Department.
