Wednesday, February 20, 2013

The third time proved to be the charm for the Verona Lady Wildcats as they advanced to the Class 1, District 4 basketball championship at Sparta with a 30-18 victory over Exeter on Feb. 18.

The Lady Tigers had won the two previous meetings against their conference rival including a 39-33 overtime victory on Feb. 8.

"We tweaked with some things on our defense prior to the game," said Verona coach Ryan Yates. "This game came down to our girl's effort. We guarded well all night."

The Lady Wildcats' defense combined with Exeter's cold shooting allowed the purple and gold to lead 9-0 after one period.

Exeter rallied in the second period and outscored Verona 8-4 to trail 13-8 at halftime.

The Lady Wildcats continued to control the pace in the third period and led 23-14 at the final break.

The Lady Tigers only managed four points in the final period.

Scoring for Verona: Tori Pinkly, 11 points; Taylor Pinkly, 8; Shelby Barsotti, 7; and Leann Hesemann, 4.

Exeter and Verona pulled off twin wins in first round action at the Class 1, District 4 Tournament.

The Exeter girls downed Lutie, 38-24, while the Exeter boys defeated Lutie, 57-44.

The Lady Tigers took care of business and the ball in defeating a Lutie team that had won only one game during the regular season.
Three Exeter boys scored in double figures as the Tigers defeated Lutie 57-41.

The Verona girls more than doubled up Niangua, winning handily by 50-22, and the Verona boys dropped Bradleyville by a count of 73-38.

Verona's girls will play Chadwick in the district final on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m.
