Southwest girls overlooked in district seeding
Insults appear often on the internet, usually in anonymous form. This one is printed clearly on the Missouri State High School Activities Association website for all the world to see.
The Southwest Lady Trojans, 22-3 on the season, are seeded #4 in the Class 3, District 12 girls basketball tournament at Seneca next week.
The eight teams in the tourney, with season records in parenthesis at the time of seeding, include: Ash Grove (17-5), Mt. Vernon (14-8), East Newton (14-8), Southwest (21-3), Diamond (11-10), Seneca (7-15), Clever (5-14) and Sarcoxie (4-16).
Sometimes the district-seeding process used in Missouri produces some strange pairings and there's the potential for misalignment.
Southwest's Brad Phillips was tight-lipped about the results, saying only that it changed the order in which his girls expected to play the top teams.
"You still have to play, you still have to win," said Phillips. "We'll be alright."
The Lady Trojans finish their regular season at Verona on Thursday, trying to complete an undefeated season in the Ozark 7 Conference. Purdy is the only conference team that has managed to score more than 30 points against Southwest's stifling defense, losing 61-48.
The Southwest girls dropped Wheaton, 73-16, and McAuley, 60-19, in a pair of conference road games last week.
District play begins at Seneca on Monday, Feb. 18. In first round games, Ash Grove plays Sarcoxie at 4 p.m., Southwest plays Diamond at 5:30 p.m. Mt. Vernon plays Clever at 7 p.m., and East Newton plays Seneca at 8:30 p.m.
