It took a while to get things rolling, but the Exeter Lady Tigers hit their stride after a tentative first quarter and posted a 41-21 victory over Wheaton on Jan. 25.
That first period of play ended with a 6-6 tie, much to the concern of Exeter's Jason Cole.
Like Frank Broyles used to say, "When you're the underdog, the longer you're tied, the more you're ahead."
The underdog Lady Bulldogs actually held a 6-4 lead on a drifting baseline jumper by Crystal Alvarado late in the first quarter. But Logan Senters, towering over the Wheaton players, scored easily with an inbounds lob to end the period. The Lady Bulldogs would not lead again.
The Exeter girls poured in 16 second-quarter points while limiting Wheaton to 3. The third quarter passed in the same vein, with Exeter using an 11-3 advantage to take a 33-12 lead at the final break.
The Lady Tigers ran a lot of clock in the final period, content with the 20-point cushion. Senters scored with an offensive board at the buzzer to create the 41-21 final score.
Scoring for Exeter: Rayanna Fare, 17 points; Senters, 14; Hannah Henson, 6; and Bailey Bowman and Katina Gregory, 2 each.
Scoring for Wheaton: Jera Prewitt, 8 points; Crystal Alvarado and Kelly Alvarado, 4 apiece; Haley Beck and Amanda Munday, 2 each; and Shelby Medley, 1.
