Hospice Compassus seeking non-medical volunteers

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

Those interested in becoming non-medical volunteers for the local office of Hospice Compassus will have the opportunity to attend training from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Monett Hospice Compassus office, located at 845 Highway 60, Suite A, in Monett.

Non-medical volunteers fill a wide variety of patient needs, including patient and family support. Other opportunities include the Dream Team, Veterans Caring for Veterans Project, the Chaplaincy Project and the Angels Program.

The Dream Team assists in transforming unfulfilled patient dreams into reality; the Veterans Caring for Veterans Project matches fellow veteran volunteers with veteran patients; the Chaplaincy Program gives volunteers the opportunity to focus on the spiritual needs of patients; and the Angels Program provides patients and their families support during the last hours of the patient's final journey.

Non-medical volunteers also help with office tasks and as community educators. There are occasional needs for volunteers with special skills or backgrounds.

Hospice Compassus also launched a new initiative, a mobile department store, in 2012. Volunteers work all year collecting new items for people of all ages.

"The initiative proved so meaningful to the residents that volunteers have decided to make this an annual event," said Janet Gard, executive director of the Monett office. "They have already begun collecting items for the 2013 store."

Upon completing non-medical volunteer training, individuals will have the option of attending chaplain's or Angels training.
