In a big 77-25 victory at Washburn on Jan. 11, the biggest news was the injury suffered by Southwest freshman guard, Jaime Shrum.
Shrum collapsed on the court just 33 seconds into the game with a severe ankle sprain and was helped to the bench. She did not return.
The Lady Trojans never skipped a beat opening a 20-4 lead over the Lady Bulldogs of Wheaton after one period.
Brad Phillips' team, clad in throwback uniforms as part of the homecoming theme, led 45-7 at the half and 69-18 at the final break. Phillips substituted as much as possible. But with a thin bench and Shrum out of action, Southwest's coach couldn't help but have starters on the floor at all times.
Eight different Lady Trojans scored in the contest with three in double figures. Southwest made nine 3-pointers in the game. Southwest improved to 13-3 overall and 3-0 in the Ozark 7 with the win.
The Lady Bulldogs scored 11 points in the third quarter, but the young Wheaton team was no match for the experienced Southwest squad. Three of the five players who scored for Wheaton were freshmen.
Scoring for Southwest: Montana Hendrix, 20 points; Michaela Mitchell, 17; Cady Swindle, 13; Taylor Mettlach, 9; Nicole Ickes, 7; Shannon Mitchell, 5; and Jessica Morgan and Shasta Sanders, 3 each.
Scoring for Wheaton: Jera Prewitt and Kelly Alvarado, 7 points apiece; Haley Beck and Crystal Alvarado, 4 each; and Shelby Medley, 3.
