On Friday night, Southwest's Nicole Ickes dribbled and scored to lead the Lady Trojans to a 57-21 win at Exeter.
When Ickes needed help, She had the Taylor Mettlach, Montana Hendrix, Cady Swindle, Jaime Shrum and Mitchell sisters to help pass, set picks and dish out assists.
The Lady Trojans owned the first quarter 14-2 and never took their collective feet off the gas. A 15-7 second quarter saw the visitors take a 29-9 halftime lead. The Lady Tigers managed only one field goal in the half against the stifling full-court press.
The trend continued in the third period with Southwest opening a 27-point lead at the final break. Michaela Mitchell dropped a perfect interior pass to Mettlach for a bucket to push the lead to 30 with 6:05 to play, and the clock raced to the game's conclusion and the 57-21 final score.
Watching the game, it was hard to fathom that this same Southwest team had lost to East Newton the night before, 40-35.
"We couldn't make a shot," Brad Phillips said of the loss to the Lady Patriots. "But tonight, the kids played really hard and had a good team effort."
The Lady Trojans improved to 11-3 overall and 2-0 in Ozark 7 Conference play.
Exeter's Rayanna Fare hit seven of her eight free throw attempts and led the Lady Tigers with 9 points.
Scoring for Southwest: Ickes, 16 points; Michaela Mitchell, 11; Shannon Mitchell, 10; Swindle, 6; Hendrix and Shrum, 5 each; and Taylor Mettlach, 4.
Scoring for Exeter: Fare, 9 points; Logan Senters, 6; Rylie Odenbrett, 3; Hannah Henson, 2; and Baillie O'Neill, 1.
