Area merchants are cautioned to be on the lookout for counterfeit bills.
Chief Deputy Leonard Collins, reported three counterfeit $50 bills had been passed in deposits through Freedom Bank in Cassville.
The case was referred to the Cassville Police Department for investigation.
"It's that time of year," said Det. Danny Boyd. "During the holidays, some people will do things they shouldn't.
"One of the bills was found in a merchant deposit," Boyd continued. "The other was in a teller's drawer."
The bills were passed on Monday, Dec. 3.
"This will be an ongoing and growing problem through the holidays," Boyd said. "The department urges merchants to check every large bill they receive with a counterfeit detecting pen before they accept it. That will prevent some of the problems."
The case remains under investigation.
Those who believe they have received counterfeit bills should report them immediately to their local law enforcement agency.
