The Southwest R-5 District Board of Education has named Wanda Smith as the homeless coordinator for the 2012-13 academic year.
Smith will work with children identified as being homeless or living in at-risk situations and their parents or guardians to ensure these children have an equal opportunity to enroll and succeed in school.
Smith was also named the district's 504 compliance coordinator and will work with students identified as having special needs from the screening process to placement.
In new business, board members approved the communication arts program, the bus route schedule the secretary's annual board report and the Missouri School Board Association's (MSBA) annual agreement with the district.
Board members approved contracting with Mercy Hospital Cassville to provide physical and occupational therapy services for qualifying students.
The board reviewed a synopsis of the A+ program, special education program, the early childhood program and federal programs including Title I, Title II Title III.
Title I programs provide assistance to students furthest from meeting the standard mean in core curriculum.
Title II funds are used for professional development for teachers and administrators.
Title III funds are dedicated for students having limited English proficiency skills.
In other business, the board:
* Reviewed the scholastic reading inventory data, which analyzes and scores student performance.
* Discussed afterschool tutoring.
* Discussed Conklin's metal roof system and acrylic coating for the middle school.
