County awarded funding

By Lindsay Reed

Barry County has once again been awarded federal funding to assist programs that provide community members with emergency food and shelter. The application deadline for the grant, which also provides money for utility and mortgage assistance programs, is Wednesday, Dec. 19.

"This grant funding helps provide, on an emergency basis, for people to receive assistance with shelter and food," said Gail Reed, Barry County OACAC director. "It offers sustainability on an emergency basis."

Barry County has been chosen to receive $12,748 through the Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency this year. The funds are administered under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.

"Grant funds provide money for utility assistance, rental and mortgage assistance, food pantry foot items and mass feeding," said Reed. "So far, Barry County has not applied for any funding for mass feeding."

A local board will determine how the funds will be awarded and distributed among emergency food and shelter program applicants in Barry County. The local board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive the grant funding and any additional monies made available under the program.

Under the terms of the grant from the national board, applicants must be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, be eligible to receive federal funds, have an accounting system, practice nondiscrimination, have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food or shelter programs and be private, voluntary organizations with a voluntary board.

For more information or to request a grant application, call the Barry County OACAC Neighborhood Center at 847-2140 or visit the center located at 700 E. Highway 248 in Cassville.
