The Cassville Lady Wildcats opened the 2012-13 season with a 47-41 victory over Galena in the Blue Eye Tournament on Monday, Nov. 26.
Emily Speakman scored 21 points to lead Cassville. Kelsey Baker and Lindsey Nolan combined for 6 points in the final two minutes to secure the win after Galena had tied the game at 41-41 with a 9-0 fourth quarter run.
Cassville (1-0) led by 16-15 at the end of the first period as Speakman scored at will in the paint, collecting 11 points in that eight-minute span.
Galena (0-1) tied the game at 22-22 in the second quarter when Kenna Greenway ripped a trey from the top of the circle to break the tie.
The Lady Bears took a 27-26 lead into halftime.
Greenway opened the third quarter with another 3-point bomb, and Galena opened a 30-26 lead. But Cassville responded with a 15-2 run that stretched into the final period, and the Lady Wildcats held a 41-32 lead with 7:06 to play.
Cassville advances to second round action with the victory and will play the Southwest Lady Trojans at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29.
