The Southwest Lady Trojans basketball team raced to a 32-10 halftime lead and then cruised to a 56-24 win over Hollister in the opening round of the Blue Eye Tournament on Nov. 26. Three Southwest players scored in double figures, led by 6'0" senior center Taylor Mettlach's 14 points.
Southwest's relentless press forced Hollister into an uptempo game, and the Lady Tigers struggled to score against the pressure. The running clock was in play at times during the final period as Southwest pulled away in the late stages.
The entire first quarter was a 12-2 Southwest run with five Lady Trojans scoring in the period. The lead reached 28-7 late in the second quarter when Mettlach strolled down the lane and scored.
Michaela Mitchell executed a perfect jump shot and scored in the final minute to create the 32-10 halftime lead.
The Southwest girls claimed the first 30-point lead of the night when Nicole Ickes buried a trey at the 4:18 mark of the final period for a 51-20 margin.
Southwest advances to play the Cassville Lady Wildcats on Nov. 29 at 6 p.m.
