Bass Pro Outdoor Fitness Festival attracts running crowd

The annual Bass Pro Outdoor Fitness Festival was held on Nov. 4 in Springfield, featuring the running of the Bass Pro Conservation Marathon and the Cohick Half-Marathon.

The number of runners swelled this year to 432 finishers for the marathon and 1,446 for the half marathon event. Many runners ended up in Springfield after the cancellation of the New York City marathon due to Hurricane Sandy.

The overall marathon winner was Richard Tirop, of Toledo, Ohio. The 38-year old posted an excellent time of 2:27:43 over the 26.2-mile course.

The top female runner was Megan Earney, 33, of Overland Park, Kan. Earney cracked the three-hour barrier, running 2:59:21.

The top Missouri male was 28-year old Silas Kisorio, of Springfield. Kisorio was timed in 2:39:05. The top Missouri female was 38-year old Melissa Belk, also of Springfield. Belk finished in 3:04:26.

In the Cohick Half-Marathon, Ruttoh Kipkirui, 26, of Houston, Texas, was the overall champion. He finished the 13.1-mile race in 1:10.25.

Marshall Reed, 27, of Miller, was the fastest Missourian, running 1:12:58 for third overall.

The fastest female was Kimi Reed, 24, also of Miller, who clocked 1:18:18 in taking ninth place overall.
