Byron James "BJ" Smith, 68, of Shell Knob, passed away on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, in Mercy Hospital Springfield.

He was born Sept. 10, 1944, in Los Angeles, Calif., the son of Joseph and Geraldine Rae (Stucker) Smith. On Aug. 8, 1999, in Hawaii, he was united in marriage to Connie Gardner.

Survivors include: his wife, Connie, of the home; one son, Eric Michael Smith and his wife, Desiree, of Los Lunas, N.M.; two daughters, Stephanie Ann Smith-Brack and her husband, Ryan, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Cheryl Ann Smith, of Los Angeles, Calif.; one stepson, Steven Dudzinski and his wife, Stephanie, of Las Vegas, Nev.; one-stepdaughter, Jaime Lee McGohan, of Cassville; one brother, Timothy P. Smith and his wife, Esperanza, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and four grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Michael D. Smith.

He grew up and received his education in Sherman Oaks, Calif., where he graduated from Notre Dame High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army. He worked at Rocketdyne Aviation and was the manager for Jet Scrap Metal in Sherman Oaks, Calif. He later moved to Oregon where he was elected planning commissioner for the city of Medford, and also owned and operated a scrap metal yard. In 2007, he moved to Shell Knob. in 2009, he became owner and operator of Dunrite Automotive.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Fohn Funeral Home, Shell Knob. Dennis Truitt, a lifelong friend, will conduct the services. Family and friends are welcome to attend a Celebration of Life at the Roadhouse immediately following the service.

Contributions may be made to BJ's favorite charities, Haven of the Ozarks or St. Jude's Children's Hospital in his memory.
